About - Mission
Florida's pioneer Classical Guitar nonprofit organization, the Miami Classical Guitar Society initiated and developed a guitar movement in Miami since 1987, establishing South Florida as a hub of international importance for the instrument. Dedicated to enriching our culture, MCGS promotes art, awareness, and education of Classical Guitar through world-class performance, innovation, and vision.

The MCGS has created and organized over 200 concerts featuring world-renowned guitarists and local talent, founded Miami's International Guitar Festival & Competition, Miami's Guitar Ensemble Festival, and the Miami Classical Guitar Orchestra, as well as directed two of the most prestigious International Guitar Festivals in the country through the Guitar Foundation of America in 1991 and 2002. A strong advocate for music and guitar education, MCGS actively works with school music programs yearly, visiting young musicians and highlighting student guitar ensembles and performers as part of our series.

Through our yearly cultural programming including world-class concerts, master classes, lectures, lecture-recitals, guitar courses, ensembles, and international competitions, MCGS founder Carlos Molina is a tireless promoter of the instrument, dedicated to offering guitar lovers, performers, teachers, and students the opportunity to enjoy wonderful performances and further develop their talents.

We look forward in continuing with our cultural endeavor to share and foster the love for this beautiful instrument within our community and beyond. Join us!

“The best two-guitar team in existence, maybe even in history…” – The Washington Post

The Miami Classical Guitar Society is very proud to present the fourth Concert of our 26th Season, featuring the finest classical guitar duo in the world, Brazilian brothers Sérgio and Odair ASSAD.

Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists in innovation, ingenuity and expression. The Grammy-winning duo are renowned for their seamless collaboration and impeccable guitar technique, performing Baroque, classical and Romantic masterworks, as well as original pieces. Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensemble playing come from both a family rich in Brazilian musical tradition and from studies with the best guitarists in South America.

The Assad Brothers have played a major role in creating new music for two guitars, and their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone. They have worked extensively with such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Egberto Gismonti, Fernando Suarez Paz, the inimitable Paquito D’Rivera. Their international career began with a major prize at the 1979 Young Artists Competition in Bratislava.

The Assad’s repertoire includes original music composed by Sérgio Assad and his re-workings of folk and jazz music as well as Latin music of almost every style. Their standard classical repertoire includes transcriptions of the great Baroque keyboard literature of Bach, Rameau and Scarlatti and adaptations of works by such diverse figures as Gershwin, Ginastera and Debussy. The Assads are also recognized as prolific recording artists, primarily for the Nonesuch and GHA labels.

Season Opening Concert: Saturday, October 26, 2013 - 8:00 PM

Brought to you in Collaboration with Rise Kern Cultural Presentations, and the Consulate of Brazil in Miami, The Miami Classical Guitar Society is very proud to present the Inaugural Concert of the 26th International Guitar Masters Series, featuring the extraordinary virtuoso sensation DUO SIQUEIRA LIMA from Brazil!

Cecilia Siqueira and Fernando Lima are considered a new phenomenon of the Brazilian guitar. This stunning pair performs with a combination of virtuosity, style and elegance reaching into the depths of baroque, contemporary repertoire as well as their beloved Brazilian popular music. Program includes selections by: Scarlatti, Handel, Mendelssohn, Rodrigo, DeFalla, Villa-Lobos, Cesar Camargo, Dominguinhos & Piazzolla.

"Each work received a brilliant and emotional return of public, impressed with the wealth of images, art and freedom." - Viktoriya Sydorenko, Lyviv, Ukraine)

The Siqueira-Lima Duo is formed by Uruguayan Cecilia Siqueira and by Brazilian Fernando Lima. Together since 2002, they are a global reference in acoustic duo formation, with remarkable performances in major festivals, major theatres and television programs. Critics have always highlighted their absolute timing and technique to acoustic guitars, but mainly the charisma and joy to make music. Their first meeting was marked by a historic event in their careers, which occurred in the 2001 International Guitar Competition in Caxias do Sul (Brazil), where they shared First Prize.

The Duo's latest recording album, “Um a Um” (2010), was released in Europe and the United States by the acclaimed Belgian GHA Records label, fully formed by Brazilian music repertoire, with unpublished arrangements created by their own and with works composed and dedicated especially to them. The CD was released in the “III International Guitar Festival of Paris” and has been praised by specialized magazines, such as the “Guitare Classique” (France), “Classical guitar” (England) and “il Fronimo (Italy).

The CD “Lado a Lado - Side by Side” (2006), revealed the intimacy of the Duo with Brazilian music and opened the doors to a broader musical universe, in addition to the classical music. Currently, they are requested in both chamber music series on popular music or Jazz festivals. The duo has performed all over Europe, United States and South America, and recently returned from their first trip to South Africa. Their tours include concerts in major theatres and festivals, such as Festival Internacional de Guitare de Paris (France), Palazzo Kongresowa (Warsaw-Poland); International Musical Festival (Kaluga-Russia); Jazz Festival (St. Petersburg-Russia), Brest International Music Festival (Brest-Belarus), Festival de Guitare de Lausanne (Lausanne-Switzerland), Festival Guitares du Monde (Perpignan-France), National Concert Hall and Festival of World Cultures, (Dublin-Ireland), Palazzina Liberty (Milan-Italy), Tchaikovsky (Gomel-Belarus) and Ësterhaze Castle (Fertod-Hungary).

The Siqueira-Lima Duo also performs with symphonic orchestras, such as the São Paulo metropolitan Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of the University of São Paulo, and teach workshops and Master Classes around the world. They recently performed alongside the great Brazilian Clarinetist and conductor, Paulo Moura, covering works of Radamés Gnattali and Astor Piazzolla.
